This cherished brew, an essential stimulant for countless individuals and researchers, now faces an uncertain future. Ethiopia, the homeland of the delicate Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), stands witness to the escalating crisis threatening this global commodity.
The core of the problem lies with climate change, which Kassahun Tesfaye, a plant geneticist at Addis Ababa University, critically states, "Coffee is critically threatened by climate change." Nearly all of the 10 million tonnes of coffee beans consumed annually globally originate from just two primary species: the robust and often bitter Robusta (Coffea canephora) and the more nuanced Arabica. Unfortunately, Arabica, which accounts for a significant portion of global consumption, suffers or dies with even a slight increase of a few degrees in temperature. Robusta, while hardier in some respects, demands massive amounts of water and experiences drastic yield drops during droughts, making both species highly vulnerable.
This looming crisis extends far beyond the morning cup; it directly imperils the livelihoods of millions. Coffee is a vital cash crop for numerous lower-income countries, providing essential income for farmers and their communities. The potential loss or severe reduction in coffee yields would not only disrupt global supply chains and impact consumer habits but also devastate economies reliant on this agricultural staple, exacerbating poverty and instability in already vulnerable regions.
In response to this existential threat, researchers worldwide are engaged in a desperate race against time.
