Her friend had prudently run their own personal statements through an online AI detector "just for safety," inspiring Jager to do the same with her own meticulously crafted essays. She selected a few readily available online detectors and submitted her statements, which she had spent considerable time perfecting. The results were profoundly alarming: "They all came back at almost 100% AI," Jager recounted, expressing her profound distress and stating, "I started freaking out" at the prospect of her hard work being dismissed. Jager's unsettling experience underscores a significant and concerning flaw in the current generation of AI-detection software. While these tools are ostensibly intended to uphold academic honesty and prevent cheating, their alarming propensity for false positives creates immense stress and potential injustice for students who have genuinely produced their own original work.
