The U.S. Space Force is increasingly turning to the private sector to handle complex orbital reconnaissance missions, a strategic shift to scale up intelligence gathering on rival space capabilities. This pivot was dramatically showcased last week when two space startups, True Anomaly and Rocket Lab, successfully completed "Victus Haze," a rendezvous mission described as being as intricate as something out of "Top Gun." The exercise involved their two rival satellites meeting in orbit, with one capturing detailed imagery of the other. This sophisticated demonstration was crucial for demonstrating the ability to closely inspect a space vehicle shortly after its orbital deployment. Such a capability is deemed essential in an era where global powers like the U.S., Russia, and China are actively developing and deploying novel space weapons. Even Rogers, CEO of True Anomaly and a veteran of U.S. military space efforts, highlighted the urgency, stating, "China and Russia launch capabilities to space on a regular basis, and part of the Space Force's job is to understand what those capabilities are. Right now we have gaps in our collection capability." The technical execution of Victus Haze was remarkable. Rocket Lab, a key competitor to SpaceX in rocket building and recent acquirer of Iridium, launched its Puma spacecraft with unprecedented speed, just 16 hours and 42 minutes after receiving the mission notice – a stark contrast to typical launches planned months in advance. True Anomaly's Jackal spacecraft, already in orbit, then had to intercept Puma. Without prior knowledge of Puma's exact orbital arrival, Jackal utilized its onboard sensors to locate and identify its target from an astonishing 2,000 kilometers away. It then performed a close-proximity maneuver, orbiting Puma and capturing imagery of various parts of the vehicle before returning to its original position. According to Rogers, this mission represents "probably the most complex rendezvous and proximity operation between two spacecraft in modern history," excluding human-crewed NASA and Space Force missions. The challenge of bringing two spacecraft together, both hurtling at speeds approaching 17,500 mph, far surpasses previous private demonstrations, such as Northrop Grumman's maintenance satellites or Astroscale's debris-hunting missions, which operate on much slower timelines. Looking ahead, both companies are preparing for even more challenging exercises, potentially including Puma attempting to evade Jackal or performing its own inspection maneuvers. True Anomaly, founded in 2022 by Rogers and a team of former military space experts, was established with the explicit goal of developing the hardware and software necessary to fulfill the new tasks assigned to the U.S. Space Force upon its creation in 2019. The successful "Victus Haze" demonstration marks a significant realization of that foundational vision. Seth Winterroth, a partner at Eclipse Ventures and True Anomaly board member, emphasized the company's unique strength: "It's not one spacecraft architecture or one piece of software or a certain set of payloads — it's a deep, deep understanding of what tactics and doctrine look like in this domain." Having raised over $1 billion, including a substantial $650 million round in March, True Anomaly is now well-positioned to compete for lucrative task orders within the Space Force's $6.2 billion Andromeda program. This program specifically seeks private sector innovation for maneuverable reconnaissance capabilities. Rogers underscored the critical importance of proven performance in this competitive field: "Flight heritage is everything, and demonstrated capability is what speaks the loudest with these opportunities."
