More than three years after its launch brought generative AI into the mainstream, OpenAI is significantly broadening its strategic focus for ChatGPT. The company is now actively moving beyond individual users to cater to the needs of families, caregivers, and older adults, signaling a deeper integration of its AI technology into daily household life. This strategic pivot is underscored by a new job posting for a dedicated product manager in San Francisco, tasked with building experiences specifically for these demographic groups across OpenAI's product suite, emphasizing trust-sensitive consumer interactions.
This expansion comes as ChatGPT's audience demographics continue to evolve. According to exclusive Sensor Tower estimates shared with TechCrunch, the global share of ChatGPT users aged 35 and older increased to 31% in Q2 from 26% a year prior, while users aged 18 to 24 saw their share decrease. Notably, in the U.S., nearly one in four smartphone users who are parents utilized ChatGPT during the quarter, a significant rise from 16% a year earlier. This data highlights a clear trend: AI, particularly ChatGPT, is no longer solely a tool for younger, tech-savvy individuals but is increasingly adopted by a broader, more diverse user base.
Experts view this shift as a natural progression, akin to how platforms like Google, Apple, and Meta eventually embedded themselves into everyday household life. Ben Bajarin, CEO of Creative Strategies, notes that OpenAI is beginning to perceive its products less as mere individual productivity tools and more as integral household technology. However, this evolution also elevates the stakes, as AI assistants mediate more than just content or devices; they engage in deeper, more personal interactions, bringing forth complex trust and safety challenges, especially concerning younger users.
Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), emphasizes that this hiring reflects both OpenAI's maturation and a crucial recognition that AI products used by children and teenagers demand different safeguards than those designed for adults. Balkam describes this approach as "safety by redesign," acknowledging that initial products were not developed with children in mind, making this a necessary and welcome response. FOSI's recent research further reveals that parents often underestimate their children's generative AI usage, underscoring the urgency for tailored safety measures.
In response to these growing concerns and amid multiple lawsuits alleging harm to children, OpenAI has already begun implementing a series of safety enhancements. These include parental controls for teen accounts, routing sensitive conversations to models better equipped to handle distress signals, and a new optional "Trusted Contact" feature to alert family members in cases of potential self-harm. Balkam suggests that AI companies have a unique opportunity to learn from the mistakes of social media platforms, which initially treated children like adults before public and regulatory pressure forced the integration of stronger safeguards.
Looking ahead, this strategic move aligns with OpenAI's broader community engagement efforts, such as exploring AI's role in youth learning and coaching. While demographic shifts are common across AI platforms (e.g., Claude, Gemini, Copilot), ChatGPT is uniquely gaining older users faster than its rivals. Bajarin predicts that this focus on families will lead to the introduction of family plans, child and teen profiles, caregiver tools, shared household memory, AI tutoring, and robust safety controls, shaping the future of consumer AI as a shared, multi-generational technology.
