Microsoft's annual sustainability report for 2026 has unveiled a troubling trend, indicating that the tech giant's carbon emissions surged by 25 percent in 2025, totaling 34 million metric tons. This substantial increase, reported "without select interventions," is primarily attributed to the rapid expansion of the company's data center infrastructure, a direct consequence of the escalating demands of artificial intelligence. Additionally, Microsoft's decision in February to cease purchasing "non-additional, unbundled renewable energy certificates" contributed to this rise.
This marks another significant setback for Microsoft in its ambitious pursuit to become carbon negative by 2030, a goal that requires the company to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces.
