The United Kingdom recently experienced its highest ever June temperature, hitting 36.1 °C (feeling like 39 °C), as a dangerous heat wave swept across Western Europe. This alarming figure stands in stark contrast to the average June temperature of 19 °C recorded in England between 1991 and 2020. Beyond the immediate threat of thousands of deaths and severe consequences for agriculture, infrastructure, and health systems, scientists are now urgently investigating a less obvious but equally critical impact: how extreme heat affects our minds and brains.
Many people, including journalists reporting on these events, have noted a personal struggle with cognitive function, experiencing difficulty thinking straight and a general mental fogginess. While exhaustion and confusion are common, the effects of heat on the brain can be far more serious, even deadly. Dr. Catherine Thompson, a cognitive psychologist at Liverpool Hope University, has been studying the impact of extreme heat on firefighters. Her team found that immediately after just 15 minutes of intense heat exposure during training, firefighters struggled to focus and control their attention, although these skills returned to normal after 20 minutes of cooling. The challenge remains to understand the prolonged effects of multi-day heat waves, a complex area of research due to logistical difficulties.
Furthermore, studies indicate that heat waves have particularly disastrous outcomes for individuals with pre-existing mental health disorders. Dr. Joshua Wortzel, director of the Heat-Mind Lab at Hartford HealthCare, highlights a clear correlation: the hotter it gets, especially during peak summer, the worse mental health outcomes become. Research by Dr. Emma Lawrence at the University of Oxford revealed a 9.7% increase in hospital admissions for mental health conditions during heat waves. Tragically, people with schizophrenia were three times more likely to die during Canada's 2021 record-breaking heat wave. The "million-dollar question," as Dr. Wortzel puts it, is precisely what specific mechanisms in our brains are affected by this unusual heat.
While factors like disrupted sleep, reduced socializing, and lack of exercise due to being stuck indoors contribute to mental health decline during heat waves, emerging biological research points to more direct impacts on brain function. Studies in lab animals suggest that excessive heat can alter neurotransmitter levels, such as serotonin, and interfere with brain network communication. It may also impede the way oxygen reaches brain cells, creating multiple biological pathways for negative effects. Alarmingly, children and young people appear to be among the most vulnerable, with Dr. Wortzel's research showing a 2.97% increase in suicide rates among 15-to-24-year-olds for every 1°C rise in average monthly temperature – more than double the rate for older adults. Other studies hint at long-term consequences for children's brain development, with altered white matter observed in babies exposed to extreme temperatures.
As we grapple with the undeniable realities of climate change, the urgency to understand and adapt to a warming world intensifies. Children born in 2020 are projected to endure approximately seven times more heat waves than their grandparents, underscoring the critical need for comprehensive research into heat's effects on the brain. The irony of a Climate Action Week event focused on extreme heat being canceled due to extreme heat itself serves as a stark reminder of the immediate and pervasive challenges we face, demanding serious attention to protecting public health, especially mental and cognitive well-being, in an increasingly hot future.
