OpenAI informed its staff on Friday of a significant company reorganization, an ongoing effort aimed at unifying its diverse product offerings. In a pivotal move, OpenAI cofounder and president Greg Brockman has officially been appointed to lead the company’s product strategy, a role he will undertake in addition to his existing responsibilities in AI infrastructure. This formal appointment follows Brockman's interim oversight of OpenAI products during the medical leave of Fidji Simo, the CEO of AGI deployment, solidifying his leadership in this critical area.
In a memo to staff, Brockman articulated the strategic imperative behind these changes: “We’re consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise.” He further elaborated that OpenAI’s various products are naturally converging, prompting the company’s decision to merge its popular conversational AI, ChatGPT, with its advanced AI coding agent, Codex, into a single, unified user experience. This integration is central to the new vision.
As part of this consolidation, OpenAI is folding ChatGPT, Codex, and its developer-facing API into one core product team. The company highlights that Codex, in particular, is increasingly powering both its consumer and enterprise offerings, enabling these products to perform digital tasks autonomously on behalf of users. This move underscores OpenAI's commitment to developing more intelligent and self-sufficient AI agents capable of handling complex operations.
The reorganization extends to other key leadership roles within OpenAI. Thibault Sottiaux, formerly the head of Codex, a product he was instrumental in building into one of the company’s fastest-growing offerings, has been tapped to lead the core product and platform teams. Sottiaux is also a key figure overseeing the development of OpenAI’s anticipated “super app,” which aims to integrate Codex, ChatGPT, and the company’s Atlas web browser into a cohesive desktop application. Meanwhile, Nick Turley, who led ChatGPT since its launch and grew it to over 900 million weekly active users, will transition to a new role leading the company’s enterprise products, stepping away from consumer-focused initiatives. Ashley Alexander, a former Instagram VP who previously led OpenAI’s health products, will now head the consumer product unit.
These changes represent the latest in a series of strategic shake-ups at OpenAI, as the leadership team endeavors to sharpen the company's focus on key product areas such as ChatGPT, Codex, and the forthcoming “super app.” Last month saw numerous executive adjustments, including Fidji Simo’s medical leave, though OpenAI confirms she remains on leave and expects to return, having collaborated directly with Brockman on these organizational shifts. The company faces intensified pressure from competitors like Anthropic in coding and Google in consumer chatbots, making product simplification a crucial step ahead of a potential IPO later this year. The recent departures of other executives, including Kevin Weil (head of AI workspace for scientists), Bill Peebles (head of Sora), and Srinivas Narayanan (CTO of enterprise applications), further underscore the dynamic period OpenAI is navigating.
