Apple's ambitious foray into the self-driving car market, known as Project Titan, never quite materialized into a consumer product. However, this seemingly failed endeavor left an unexpected and profound legacy: the development of the company's highly powerful on-device AI processing chips. Early in the car project's lifecycle, Apple engineers quickly recognized the critical need for robust, on-device artificial intelligence capabilities to handle the complex demands of autonomous driving. While the dedicated car processor never saw completion, as detailed by Mark Gurman, this foundational requirement directly spurred the creation of Apple's innovative Neural Engine, which now forms the backbone of its AI processing across its product ecosystem.
The Neural Engine made its public debut with the iPhone X, integrated within the A11 Bionic chip. In its initial applications, it was primarily utilized for advanced computer vision tasks, powering groundbreaking features such as FaceID for secure authentication, the expressive Animoji, and various augmented reality experiences. By establishing this crucial groundwork for on-device AI processing, Apple strategically positioned itself as an early leader in the hardware space, subsequently extending the Neural Engine's capabilities to its acclaimed M-series chips for desktops and laptops. While Apple's software efforts in AI have sometimes been perceived as lagging behind industry rivals, its hardware prowess in this domain has consistently garnered impressive reviews, also enabling the company to strongly emphasize its privacy features by minimizing data transmission to the cloud.
Looking ahead, Apple is unequivocally making its AI hardware a central pillar of its long-term strategy. Industry reports, notably from Gurman, indicate a significant shift in the company's chip development roadmap. Apple is reportedly bypassing the traditional Pro, Max, and Ultra iterations of its upcoming M6 chip, opting instead to accelerate the development of the next-generation M7 chip. This strategic acceleration underscores the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of on-device AI performance.
The M7 chip is anticipated to arrive in the first half of 2027, bringing with it substantial upgrades to the Neural Engine, promising even greater AI processing power and efficiency. Furthermore, the M7 Ultra, a more powerful variant, is projected to serve as the foundational architecture for an entirely new server product from Apple. This server-grade chip is expected to boast an extraordinary capacity, supporting up to 1.5 terabytes of RAM, signaling Apple's intent to expand its hardware dominance into the high-performance computing and data center segments, leveraging its homegrown AI chip technology.
