The specter of AI-driven job losses continues to loom large, intensifying with each corporate layoff announcement. By May 2026, nearly 90,000 job cuts were explicitly linked to AI, and some projections suggest that up to 15% of U.S. jobs could be eliminated by AI within the next five years. The tech industry's assurances that AI will also generate new employment opportunities do little to assuage these fears, particularly for a generation of students contemplating their career prospects upon graduation.
However, a recent report from Ramp and Revelio Labs, which meticulously track enterprise AI spending and workforce data from approximately 22,000 companies, introduces a significant counter-narrative to this gloomy outlook. Their findings reveal that companies making substantial investments in AI are, in fact, experiencing faster headcount growth. This trend holds true even for entry-level positions, which many observers had feared were most vulnerable to automation. "High-intensity adopters," defined as firms spending an average of $30 per employee per month on AI in their initial three months, reported an impressive 10.2% increase in their workforce.
This growth isn't confined to a single department; headcount expanded across diverse functions including engineering, sales, administration, customer service, finance, marketing, and scientist roles. The most robust job creation among these high-intensity adopters was observed within the information sector, encompassing software, internet, media, and other tech-adjacent enterprises. Furthermore, the report directly challenges the notion that AI is exclusively detrimental to junior roles, noting that entry-level headcount in these tech-forward firms actually rose by 12%, a finding that contrasts with previous research from Goldman Sachs indicating a net loss of 16,000 jobs per month for entry-level workers.
Despite these encouraging signals, the data is not without its nuances. The report acknowledges a significant bias towards tech-forward, knowledge-work firms, many of which are venture-backed and inherently fast-growing. This makes it challenging to definitively attribute the hiring surge solely to AI adoption, rather than simply observing AI's presence in companies that were already on an expansion trajectory. The authors candidly admit that their paper "does not show that AI universally creates jobs," but it effectively "counters claims that AI will lead to broad job losses." It suggests AI serves as a tool for firm-expansion, making core outputs like code writing, debugging, and product development cheaper or faster, thereby raising the return on expanding the entire firm.
Crucially, the report also highlights a potential for a widening divide in the market. Companies that merely subscribe to AI tools or run pilots without committing to sustained, strategic investments do not typically see corresponding gains in headcount. This implies that firms already possessing significant resources—such as capital, skilled technical staff, robust founder networks, and ample management bandwidth—are best positioned to translate AI adoption into tangible business growth and job creation. The authors speculate that this disparity may continue to grow, cautioning that "Firms without those channels may fall behind," underscoring the importance of strategic resource allocation in the AI era.
