Much like Claude Code assists software engineers, Claude Science is engineered to autonomously conduct significant work based on concise, high-level instructions. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, emphasized this, stating, "It represents how important this is to our mission that this is right up there with Claude Code and Claude Cowork as the next really significant product that we’re releasing." He added that the company believes the life sciences offer "by far the greatest opportunity" to fulfill its mission of developing AI that serves humanity’s long-term well-being. Intriguingly, Anthropic itself plans to utilize Claude Science to pursue its own research into drugs for rare and neglected diseases. For the past decade, Google DeepMind has largely been at the forefront of AI for science, notably with its AlphaFold model, which earned CEO Demis Hassabis and researcher John Jumper a Nobel Prize in chemistry. DeepMind has also made substantial contributions across meteorology and materials science. However, the rapidly evolving landscape of AI, particularly in lucrative LLM applications like coding, appears to have left DeepMind struggling to keep pace. Anthropic, with its CEO Dario Amodei being a PhD scientist and the recent high-profile recruitment of DeepMind's own John Jumper, is now exceptionally well-positioned to inherit DeepMind's scientific mantle and drive future innovations. Claude Science is designed not to replace existing tools like Claude Code but to augment and build upon them within scientists' workflows. Many scientific research endeavors today involve coding, and Claude Science empowers researchers who may not be expert software engineers by not only writing code but also facilitating its execution on powerful computer clusters—a crucial yet often complex requirement for many scientific projects. Furthermore, it prioritizes reproducibility, allowing scientists to meticulously trace and verify the accuracy and validity of any result or figure. Harvard physicist Matthew Schwartz has even estimated that Anthropic's Opus 4.5 model, which underpins these tools, is as capable of executing scientific projects as a second-year graduate student. While Claude Science holds the potential to assist across a broad spectrum of scientific research, its initial design and marketing clearly target molecular and cellular biology, with a strong emphasis on drug development. The system seamlessly interfaces with various tools essential for genetics, chemistry, and protein biology, making it an invaluable asset for researchers seeking new therapeutic agents. During the launch event, Alexander Tarashansky, who spearheaded Claude Science's development, demonstrated its ability to autonomously identify potential drug candidates for phenylketonuria, a severe rare genetic disorder. This dual focus on humanitarian impact and strategic market positioning highlights Anthropic's ambition. The company's decision to pursue its own drug research for neglected diseases, armed with Claude Science, serves a dual purpose: advancing scientific frontiers and gaining real-world insights into the product's capabilities. Beyond the obvious humanitarian benefits of prioritizing drug development, especially for general-purpose scientific tools, there's a clear strategic business advantage. Pharmaceutical companies possess significantly deeper financial resources than academic researchers. Securing major new contracts with these industry giants could solidify Anthropic's profitability as it approaches its anticipated IPO later this year, ensuring its sustained growth beyond the current "tokenmaxxing" trend.
