Odyssey, a pioneering AI startup specializing in 'world models,' has successfully closed a Series B funding round, securing an impressive $310 million. This significant investment propels the company's valuation to a remarkable $1.45 billion, solidifying its status as a unicorn in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. The round was spearheaded by Natural Capital, with substantial participation from industry giants including Amazon, AMD Ventures, and GV, alongside other prominent investors.
Founded by self-driving vehicle luminaries CEO Oliver Cameron and CTO Jeff Hawke, Odyssey is at the forefront of developing world models—the next frontier in AI beyond traditional text- and chat-based large language models. These sophisticated models are designed to gather vast amounts of data from the physical world and simulate it with highly accurate physics, enabling AI systems to understand and interact with their environment in a more profound way. Odyssey's unique approach to data collection, reminiscent of Google Earth, involves deploying individuals with specialized cameras to meticulously map and digitize real-world environments.
The founders' extensive backgrounds in autonomous vehicle technology provide a strong foundation for Odyssey's innovative direction. Oliver Cameron previously co-founded and served as CEO of Voyage, an autonomous vehicle startup later acquired by GM's Cruise, where he became VP of product. Jeff Hawke, on the other hand, was a key engineer at Wayve, a notable U.K. self-driving startup. Their combined expertise in real-world simulation and autonomous systems is clearly reflected in Odyssey's core mission.
Since its inception in 2023, Odyssey has rapidly expanded its offerings, now providing a diverse array of world models tailored for various applications, ranging from sophisticated video-game creation to advanced robotics. The company has gained particular recognition for its ability to generate rich, interactive video content directly from text prompts, showcasing the immense potential of its technology in creative and industrial sectors.
A pivotal aspect of this funding round is the strategic backing from Amazon. As part of this collaboration, Odyssey has designated AWS as its preferred cloud provider and committed to optimizing its advanced models to run efficiently on AWS's Trainium chips. This move positions Odyssey to leverage Amazon's robust cloud infrastructure and compete directly with established AI chip leaders like Nvidia, further enhancing its technological capabilities and market reach.
Beyond the institutional investors, Odyssey has also attracted an impressive roster of angel investors, including highly respected figures such as Jeff Dean, Elad Gil, Garry Tan, Guillermo Rauch, and Cruise founder Kyle Vogt. With this latest injection of capital, the company's total funding to date now stands at $337 million, underscoring strong confidence from both venture capitalists and individual tech visionaries in Odyssey's groundbreaking vision and future potential.
