While specific companies were not named by Trump, reports from CNBC suggest that his administration has been in talks with OpenAI, a leading AI firm, regarding a potential equity stake. This development signals a growing interest from governmental bodies in securing public benefit from the rapid advancements in AI technology.
The discussions with OpenAI are said to involve the possibility of using some of this equity to seed a "Public Wealth Fund," an initiative recently proposed by OpenAI itself. This fund aims to distribute proceeds directly to citizens, thereby allowing a broader segment of the population to participate in the economic upside generated by AI-driven growth, irrespective of their initial wealth or access to capital. Bloomberg further reported that Trump, when questioned about the idea, expressed his engagement with AI executives on "concepts where pieces could be given to the American public, where the American public essentially becomes a partner with the companies." This vision aligns with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's own discussions, which reportedly began as early as 2025, concerning a government stake in major AI companies.
This potential foray into government ownership of a for-profit AI company is not entirely new territory for Trump, whose administration previously took a 10% stake in the struggling chipmaker Intel last year. What's particularly noteworthy is that the concept of public ownership in AI has also garnered interest from across the political spectrum. Senator Bernie Sanders, for instance, this week proposed a one-time, 50% tax on AI giants such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI (part of SpaceX), to be paid in the form of company stock.
Sanders argued that such a tax, especially as these companies potentially prepare for public offerings this year, would "give the public a direct role in determining the future of this technology." He emphasized that it would also "guarantee that the trillions of dollars potentially generated by A.I. are used to improve the lives of all of us," underscoring a shared concern about equitable distribution of AI's future wealth. This bipartisan, albeit ideologically divergent, interest highlights the pressing societal questions surrounding AI's economic impact and ownership.
However, the idea is not without its critics and cautionary voices. David Sacks, a prominent investor and podcaster who recently stepped down as Trump's AI and crypto czar, acknowledged the resonance of Sanders' idea, even among some on the right. Yet, he warned that such measures could "accelerate the corporate-government fusion we’re already sliding toward," suggesting a potential blurring of lines between private enterprise and state control. Similarly, former Microsoft employee Dare Obasanjo took to social media to suggest that "The groundwork is already being laid for a government bailout of OpenAI," hinting at underlying financial vulnerabilities or strategic maneuvers.
