Meta Forges Landmark AI Data Center Deal with Reliance in India
Meta has announced a significant partnership with Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries, marking its first major investment in AI infrastructure within India. This strategic collaboration will see the development of a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, a move that underscores India's rapidly growing importance as a global hub for AI infrastructure. The agreement, unveiled on Wednesday, deepens a relationship that began with Meta's multi-billion dollar investment in Reliance's Jio Platforms and expanded into a joint venture for enterprise AI solutions. The deal comes at a time when India is solidifying its position as a prime destination for AI infrastructure investments. Global tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have recently poured capital into AI and cloud infrastructure in the country, driven by the escalating demand for computing power to train and deploy advanced AI models. India's data center footprint has expanded dramatically, with installed capacity surging from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to around 1.5 gigawatts in 2025, and projections indicating a more than fivefold increase to over 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade. New Delhi has actively courted such investments through attractive policy incentives, including tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers until 2047 for services sold overseas but run from Indian data centers. This supportive regulatory environment, coupled with the sheer scale of demand for local data processing and cloud adoption, makes India an irresistible market for tech companies seeking to expand their AI capabilities. Beyond global players, Indian conglomerates like Adani and Tata Consultancy Services, along with Blackstone-backed AirTrunk, are also making substantial investments in data center capacity. The Meta-Reliance agreement is a testament to their evolving partnership, which has steadily grown since Meta's $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms in 2020. The new Jamnagar facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, with Meta committing to cover the entire cost of energy and water for its operations. This commitment highlights both companies' dedication to sustainable practices in high-energy consumption sectors. Reliance stated that the 168-megawatt facility is expected to be ready within two years and has the potential for future expansion. Crucially, this data center will also support Meta's global infrastructure and AI computing requirements, integrating India more directly into Meta's worldwide network of AI facilities. Reliance aims to become a comprehensive provider for AI infrastructure, offering end-to-end services from design and construction to renewable power, connectivity, and ongoing operations. In parallel, Meta has independently secured nearly 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India through agreements with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy. While the financial details of the Meta-Reliance agreement, the specific AI workloads, or future investment plans were not disclosed, this partnership firmly establishes India as a critical component of Meta's global AI strategy and a key player in the burgeoning worldwide AI infrastructure race.
