China Achieves Major Reusable Rocket Milestone, Challenges SpaceX Dominance

China's state-owned space company, the Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), has successfully launched a Long March orbital rocket and, crucially, landed its booster on a seagoing recovery vessel. This monumental achievement makes China only the second nation to master this complex feat, a capability that previously propelled Elon Musk's SpaceX to the forefront of the global space industry. CASC has declared its intention to reuse this booster, which boasts a payload capacity comparable to SpaceX's workhorse Falcon 9, before the end of the year.
Unlike SpaceX's Falcon 9, which deploys landing legs to settle onto a floating platform, China's innovative approach involves capturing the descending rocket within a sophisticated netting system strung across a large frame on its recovery ship. This method, while distinct, demands equally advanced engineering: precise guidance software, sensitive sensors, and robust engines capable of multiple restarts and surviving the intense atmospheric re-entry. The successful demonstration underscores China's rapid advancements in rocket technology.
SpaceX currently dominates the reusable rocket landscape, consistently breaking launch records with its fleet of Falcon 9 boosters. This cost-effective reusability is fundamental to the rapid deployment of its Starlink satellite network, which relies on cheap and frequent access to space, as well as its critical missions for NASA and the U.S. Space Force. Victoria Samson, chief director for Space Security and Stability at the Secure World Foundation, hailed China's demonstration as a "huge game changer," predicting it will "drop the launch of cost for them tremendously" and enable them to use it as "soft power outreach" by offering inexpensive launches to potential allies.
While national security regulations effectively segment the global rocket market, preventing China from directly competing with U.S. and European providers for launch customers, the implications for indirect competition are profound. A reusable rocket capability will empower China to develop its own robust satellite communications networks and hypothetical orbital data centers, directly challenging SpaceX's Starlink in key global markets, particularly across Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. This development also carries significant geopolitical weight, potentially diminishing the U.S. military's advantage in space and following recent reports of China and Russia cooperating on strategies to counter Starlink's effectiveness in conflicts like Ukraine.
The race for reusable rockets is far from over. SpaceX itself is pushing the boundaries with its much larger Starship rocket, with a new launch attempt anticipated soon after mixed results from its last trial. Other players in the U.S. are also making strides; Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin successfully recovered a booster in 2025 and reused it this year, though a recent launchpad explosion has caused delays. Rocket Lab is developing its reusable Neutron rocket, and Stoke Space aims to test its fully reusable rocket later this year, highlighting a vibrant and competitive global landscape in advanced space technology.
