Apple Unveils Next-Gen Siri AI and Apple Intelligence at WWDC

Apple has officially unveiled its next generation of artificial intelligence, dubbed "Apple Intelligence," alongside a significantly revamped Siri AI at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). This announcement marks Apple's ambitious second attempt to deliver on its promise of a smarter, more capable, and personalized intelligent assistant, two years after its initial plans for Apple Intelligence and an enhanced Siri failed to fully materialize. The company describes this new Siri as an "entirely new version," emphasizing its improved conversational abilities and expanded functionalities.
The updated Siri AI is designed for system-wide accessibility, allowing it to interpret on-screen content and seamlessly interact with various applications across Apple's ecosystem. Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of software engineering, underscored the company's commitment to privacy, stating that all queries are either processed directly on the device or securely in the cloud via Apple's Private Cloud Compute. This enhanced Siri will be rolled out across a wide range of Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro, with new access methods such as swiping down from the Dynamic Island on iPhones and a floating orb visualization for Vision Pro users.
Furthermore, Siri is now getting its own dedicated application, featuring a conversational interface akin to popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. This app supports both text and voice interactions, maintains a saved history of conversations, and syncs seamlessly with iCloud, enabling users to continue discussions across multiple devices. Powering these advancements are new Apple Foundation Models, developed in collaboration with Google, which allow Siri to interact deeply with apps, answer context-specific questions, suggest actions based on image content, and assist with tasks like message composition and calendar management. While many of these features are familiar from other AI platforms, Apple aims to integrate them uniquely into its ecosystem.
Beyond Siri, Apple has also introduced a significant overhaul of its Photos app, integrating new AI-powered image-editing capabilities. These include enhanced versions of familiar tools like "Clean Up" for removing unwanted elements and "Extend" for generating content to expand image edges. A more novel addition is "Spatial Reframing," a feature inspired by Apple's spatial photo technology for Vision Pro, which allows users to virtually "move the camera" to reframe photos, adjust angles, or alter subject framing, working with nearly all photos in a user's library regardless of their origin.
Apple took the opportunity to address its relatively late entry into the generative AI space, with Federighi asserting that the company's deliberate approach prioritizes user needs and privacy over a hasty pursuit of AI for its own sake. He contrasted Apple's strategy with others "racing forward, seemingly pursuing AI for the sake of AI, without clear regard for the people." This launch also follows Apple's recent settlement of a class-action lawsuit regarding previous Apple Intelligence claims and a strategic partnership with Google to leverage Gemini for certain AI features, underscoring Apple's concerted effort to catch up in the AI race.
However, the rollout will be phased and subject to certain limitations. Siri AI is currently available to developers and will enter a public beta later this year. Initially, it will only be available in English and will not launch in China due to regulatory issues. Furthermore, it won't be available on iOS or iPadOS in the EU, though it will be accessible on other platforms there. Hardware requirements are also stringent, with some of the most powerful on-device AI features limited to specific high-end models: iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro, iPads with at least an M4 chip, and Macs with at least an M3 chip and 12GB of RAM or more.
